Suzano is dedicated to ensuring that 100% of the products delivered to customers can be traced back to their wood source. To achieve this, the company has implemented a robust traceability program that holds certifications from the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) for Chain of Custody. This program encompasses all aspects, including forestry units, industrial units, distributors, and commercial offices, audited annually by an independent certifying body.
In the traceability program, professionals are adequately qualified and trained to operate computerized systems, maintain registers, complete tracking forms, and transport and sales or transfer tax documents.
Starting with the wood sourced from Brazil, we follow a due diligence program that includes legal, social, and environmental validations. Once this process is complete, the production unit is registered in our Zenith system. This system contains essential information such as the geolocation of plantations and preservation areas, the name of the rural property, the region, the state, and any certifications. It encompasses wood managed by us and our partners.
This record encompasses all stages, from planting to management, harvesting, and transporting the wood to the mill. When transporting the wood, a tax document is issued that accompanies it to the mill. The information is entered into our computerized system, which maintains a comprehensive history and links it to producing finished products such as pulp, paper, and tissue. Each product is assigned a batch number, and this information is retained in the tax documents throughout storage, transportation, and sale to the end customer.
All traceability controls are evaluated during first and second-party internal audits and third-party external audits conducted by the certification body.
In 2024, Suzano conducted 62 internal Chain of Custody audits that covered a comprehensive scope, which included mills and controlled wood. The audits were carried out at various locations: Aracruz (ES), Belém (PA), Imperatriz (MA), Jacareí (SP), Limeira (SP), Mogi das Cruzes (SP), Mucuri (BA), Ribas do Rio Pardo (MS), Rio Verde (SP), Suzano (SP), and Três Lagoas (MS). Additionally, the audits extended to the distributors' network, comprising 32 centers in Brazil, one in Argentina, 1 in Ecuador, and 1 in Finland. Furthermore, the traders' scope included regions such as China, the United States, and Europe.
Independent audits were conducted at the Aracruz (ES), Mogi das Cruzes (SP), Mucuri (BA), and Ribas do Rio Pardo (MS) facilities, as well as at six distribution centers and commercial offices located in China, the United States, and Europe. In total, 15 audits were performed. Some non-conformities were identified; however, these do not affect the traceability program. For further details, please visit the certification's public website.
