context

Suzano holds forest management certifications that demonstrate the company's commitment to responsible care and sustainable use of natural resources in the areas it manages, as well as its efforts to engage with surrounding communities. The eucalyptus plantations are certified by two reputable organizations: the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) and the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). Each of these certification systems has its own specific principles and criteria. The plantations are situated in the states of Bahia, Espírito Santo, Maranhão, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Tocantins.

Suzano has a Forest Management Plan for each region where it operates. This plan contains all the necessary information, documents, reports, records, and maps that describe, justify, and regulate the activities carried out by any manager, team, or organization—whether related to the management unit or not. It also includes socio-environmental programs and statements of goals and policies.

The company implements a due diligence program for controlled source areas based on the FSC-STD-40-005 standard for controlled wood, ensuring their safety.

  • Comply with all applicable legislation, respecting the rights of ownership, possession, and peaceful use of the land;
  • Do not compromise High Conservation Value Areas (HCVAs);
  • Respect human rights;
  • Ensure the protection of the rights of Indigenous peoples and traditional communities.;
  • Ensure the protection of workers' rights, including health and safety issues, while adhering to the Fundamental Principles of the International Labor Organization (ILO);
  • Do not convert native areas into commercial timber plantations.

The assessment of controlled wood is conducted annually through audits, ensuring that the forest management practices are equivalent to those in certified forest areas. In both cases, there is the forest inventory, ongoing monitoring and control of pests and diseases, and the adoption of management practices to minimize impacts on biodiversity. These practices include ecological restoration, protection of springs and rivers, and monitoring biodiversity and hydrology.

We have teams dedicated to creating productive and sustainable forests while adhering to the best practices in silviculture, harvesting, and logistics, alongside the quality and safety standards required by the company.

We have received authorization from the National Biosafety Commission (CTNBio) of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation, and Communications to conduct research on transgenic eucalyptus in laboratory and field settings. It’s important to emphasize that we do not commercially use genetically modified eucalyptus forests; our research is solely aimed at understanding and evaluating the potential of this technology and its associated risks. This research is conducted in areas outside forest certifications scope.

The transportation and storage of chemical products are conducted following current Brazilian legislation and in compliance with FSC® and PEFC standards. Additionally, our engagement with Indigenous and traditional communities is done in a participatory manner that promotes the autonomy of these regions.

In 2024, no certifications were suspended or terminated.
